The Life of George
Prologue:
(The scene opens in a bar where George, a 46 year old man with tan, worn skin and a face that is complete with a bushy mustache and beard, is sitting alone, drunk with 5 empty beer bottles in front of him. A man, tall, western looking, 36 year old, walks in and sits next to him
Will: (A random customer from the village, signals the bartender) I'll have a beer. (he looks over to George and analyzes his state) Looks like you've had a hard day.
George: (sighs) Not just a hard day...A hard life.
Will: Oh really? Why is that?
George: Its a long story.
Will: Well, I got nothing but time. (He extends his hand) The name’s Will by the way.
George: George (Turns and shakes his hand)
Will: So tell me, What's so bad about your life?
George: Well it all started about a year ago when GMOs were first introduced to my side of town…
(The scene fades into a small, one story house where George sits down on the couch in their small living room complete with old family portraits that go back to, what seems to be, the mid-1800s. He turns on the TV to the news channel)
TV: Good afternoon everyone we are going to be starting off by talking about Monsanto, the CEO of Monsanto GMO Company. He is selling GMO seeds to a handful of farmers and many are not happy about this. GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organisms, and lots of people believe that this science is completely and utterly unnatural. Lately Monsanto has been suing farmers because of the claims of GMO seeds found in some farmers “backyards”. Freddy Glogowski a victim of Monsanto's wrath comments, “Its not our fault! When the wind blows some of the GMO seeds, from neighboring farms, blow over to the farm of others and “mingle” to pollinate with the plants of others and then I have GMO seeds in my farm! Its completely natural for plants to do this! Its not our fault! He’s the one who is tampering with nature!!”
George: (Puts his hands on his head and rubs his beard, takes a deep breath and gasps, and says to his wife) We have to do something about this!!!
Talia: Its not that big of a deal. It not like we are gonna die of GMO food! Right?
George: Yeah, I guess thats true. Lets go to bed it is getting late.
(George begins to dream. He is in a hospital standing by a hospital bed while his mother sobs at his father's bedside on her knees, and then he realizes that he is remembering a time long ago when his dad was on the verge of death, his dad was 66 years old)
George’s dad: Son I’m getting old, and it is your responsibility to take care of the farm when I’m gone (a long pause of silence) It has been in the family for years and years and today is the day that I pass it to you, as you will in the future to your son.
(George is a little 12 year old kid in this dream and his eyes are red from crying a lot. He doesn't really like the way his dad is talking like he’s never going to come back)
George: But dad I won't have to yet, you're going to come back with us right?
(tears swell up in George’s eyes again, and George’s Dad smiles sweetly)
Georges Dad: Son, everyone has a time and, well, my time is up. You make sure you take care of the farm and your mom too okay.
George: (starts bawling) okay
(His Dad smiles at him and closes his eyes)
George's Dad: (with his eyes closed) I Love you
George: I Love yo…
(A Hospital monitor lets out a long beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep signaling his dads death, interrupting George)
George: (looks up with tears now flowing out) Dad? Dad! Daddy, No! Come back!!! We need [you (he’s now shaking his dad’s body frantically trying to wake him up) Wake up Dad!!! Wake ..up!! You cant leave me!!!
(The scene fades out and George wakes up with a start to find himself in bed, his alarm clock beeping)
Chorus: (as Georges self conscious )
What are you gonna do,
listen to your fathers words,
never give up and don't lose the farm,
do it for your family,
do it for your Dad.
Be careful!,
for the cost of GMOs is high,
Hard times are coming,
So prepare!
SCENE ONE:
(The scene changes back to the bar and the Bartender interrupts)
Bartender: Sorry guys but we are about to close.(George and Will pay, leave a tip, and walk out)
Will: So you were saying?(as they walk towards the door and into the outside night)
George: So then the next day I on the porch when I see a bunch of trucks, Marked with Monsanto's brand, drive past on the road towards his neighbors property. I shook my head in disbelief. Later I saw my neighbor plant seeds and spray them with something that looked like water. As the day went on a storm came and it was windy.
(The storm went on for days and the wind did not stop. They had to stay inside and by the end of it they had a river in their front yard.)
George: Lets see if the field survived the storm (George checks the field and everything seems to be in shape)
(The scene goes back to George and Will where they are walking on the sidewalk towards a park, around the middle of the night)
George: A couple days later when the plants start to bloom, I start to notice that the plants were growing bigger then normal and that some of my crops were seedless!
Will: What did you do then?
George: Well, I figured out that my crops and my neighbors crops had cross pollinated when the storm came. And I came to the conclusion that my crops were now GMO crops. I tried to sue him (He says as the both sit down on a bench at the park) But unfortunately I couldn't.
Chorus: (as Georges self conscious
sueing does nothing,
You tryed but lost,
your future has sunk,
you have no hope,
listen to me,
GMOs can be good and bad,
make the best decision,
more pain awaits,
for you and your family.
SCENE 2:
George: Anyways back to the story. Two days later some cars showed up took some samples from our crops and gave us a paper saying that we’ve been sued and we were to appear at a court hearing, I was later found guilty and we lost all of our money. Life was really hard after that. (sighs) I had to work and work for the longest time to make sure that I didn't lose the farm and, I'm still working. Then all the work started piling up and my wife and I got into a huge fight.
(Scene fades to the past and George and Talia are fighting in the livingroom)
Talia: George what are we gonna do we lost everything!
George: (sighs) I don't know!
Talia: Well you better figure something out! (she says in a rough voice) We need to figure something out, for Johnny!
George: I know, I know (silence) ...Why are you leaving all the work to me, anyways? Its always me!... me,me,me! (he says in a rough voice)
Talia: (she starts talking louder and louder) because you were the one who decided to live next to other farmers when I said to move out in the open where nothing wrong can happen! and we wouldn't be going through this if we had listened to me and lived in the open!
George:(yelling) Well maybe you should go live in the open… I don't need you anyways!
Talia: Well maybe I will (she says as her eyes get watery)...
(the scene goes back to Will and George)
George: Thats all I remember, but the next day Talia, my wife, left and she took Johnny...My son (Silence)
Will: I’m sorry to hear that (said in a soft voice, long pause)
George: Ya, and I never got the chance say goodbye to Johnny (a tear escapes his eyes and they sit there together for a while)...but I better get going it's getting late, and tomorrow is another day of hard work!
Will: Ya me too…(they shake hands) it was nice meeting you…
(They both head in opposite directions, Once George gets home he stands in his lifeless field and thinks for a while. He pulls a gun out and says)
George: What have I done!? I've lost everything!!!
(He points the gun to the neighbor's field his hand shaking, tears are now flowing down his face. He lets out a big sigh and lowers the gun, he stays still for one more last time to think,... and then he raises the gun to the side of his head, slowly, ...and bammm)
Chorus: (as self conscience)
What have I done,
I have failed my father,
I have failed my whole family,
I have failed myself,
I am sorry,
I failed you all,
I’m sorry I’m sorry,
may you all live happily without me…
(everything is spinning as the scene fades into darkness)
